My work experience placement at the New Statesman came about quite by chance. I was looking at the websites of my favourite newspapers and current affairs magazines with an eye to my up-coming work experience when I saw that the New Statesman was ‘working actively with selected charities to offer work experience to students from low-income families and under-represented group.’

Journalism has woken up to how diversity in news rooms enriches content and makes it more representative and relevant to consumers. But the industry simply hasn’t kept pace with society’s cultural expansion and is playing catch-up.
