The use of artificial intelligence in journalism, published by the NCTJ, explores how AI is becoming part of everyday newsroom practice across the UK and the opportunities and challenges that come with it.
Based on interviews with 14 journalists and editors from national, regional, specialist and broadcast news organisations, the report looks at how AI is being used in newsrooms today. From streamlining routine tasks to supporting reporting and content production, it examines the ways journalists are adapting to new technology while maintaining the professional standards audiences expect.
The research found that all those consulted were using AI in some form, although approaches varied across organisations. Most described a culture of “cautious innovation”, embracing the benefits of AI while recognising the need for accuracy, verification, transparency and human oversight.
The report also highlights a growing need for AI literacy across the industry. As AI becomes an increasingly important tool for journalists, the findings reinforce the importance of understanding both its potential and its limitations, alongside the core skills and editorial judgement that remain at the heart of good journalism.
The research will help shape the NCTJ’s ongoing work to ensure journalists can use AI responsibly and confidently, while upholding the standards that underpin trusted journalism.
