Emily Heward, a senior reporter with the Halifax Courier, has won the Pamela Meyrick Award for her performance in the National Examination Certificate.

The Pamela Meyrick Award is presented annually, by Nicola Meyrick, daughter of Pamela for the best NCE candidate working on a newspaper in the North of England or North Wales.

Speaking about her win, Emily said: “I’m absolutely made up to have won. It’s a complete surprise – but a very pleasant one!

“The exams were really tough and I was just thrilled to have passed at all, so to find out I’d got two distinctions, and now this, was amazing.

“My news editor Arlene Lawler has been a brilliant trainer so I really want to say a big thank you to her for all her support.”

Before joining the Halifax Courier, Emily studied at Liverpool Community College. She wins a certificate and a cheque for £125.
