One current and two former students from Staffordshire University’s two NCTJ-accredited journalism courses have been shortlisted in the 2011 Midlands Media Awards.

Danny Milligan, who is currently in the final year of his BA (Hons) Journalism degree, has been shortlisted in the Student Journalist of the Year category.

In addition Rachel Butler and James Montgomery have both been nominated for Newcomer of the Year. Rachel completed her BA (Hons) Journalism in July 2010 and now works as a news reporter for The Derby Telegraph, while James is working as a features writer at Staffordshire Life magazine despite only finishing his NCTJ-accredited MA Journalism course in January 2011.

Award Leader Pete Leydon said: “It’s great to have three NCTJ-trained students shortlisted, and it is thoroughly deserved. “All three possess excellent writing skills and also have those key personal qualities needed to succeed in journalism – determination, discipline and a real hunger for story-telling!”

The award ceremony takes place at Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham on Thursday, 10 March.
