Sports journalism course at News Associates London wins best performing NCTJ-accredited course for 2018-19

The best performing NCTJ-accredited courses have been celebrated in the Awards for Excellence 2019, sponsored by The Independent.

The best performing NCTJ-accredited courses have been celebrated in the Awards for Excellence 2019, sponsored by The Independent.

The course performance awards are based on students’ achievements in the Diploma in Journalism exams. In the 2018-19 academic year, 230 students on accredited courses achieved the gold standard of A-C grades in all exams and shorthand at 100 words per minute.

The sports media diploma course at News Associates London was named the best performing course overall, achieving an outstanding 94 per cent gold standard rate. The centre also won the award for having the top performing independent provider fast-track courses.

Celebrations were also in order for City of Wolverhampton College, which won the award for the best performing further education course for the ninth year running.

The awards for the best performing degree courses went to the University of Portsmouth, for their BA journalism course, and Cardiff University, for their MA news journalism course.

The innovation of the year award was also presented at the ceremony, which took place at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on Thursday, 28 November.

The award, which celebrates the new and exciting ways centres are teaching and inspiring student journalists, was won by Ulster University.

Following the killing of 29-year-old reporter Lyra McKee in Derry during a riot in April 2019, the university developed an intensive six-day module to equip their students with skills to report effectively and safely within hostile environments, increasing their situational awareness and personal security.

The judges described this training as “outstanding, relevant and original”.
