New edition of McNae’s Essential Law for Journalists published

The 28th edition of McNae’s Essential Law for Journalists, the definitive guide to media law for journalists and journalism students, has been published by Oxford University Press in partnership with the NCTJ.

First published in 1954, McNae’s is a long-established core text for NCTJ-accredited courses and beyond. The book provides comprehensive coverage of the legal issues journalists need to understand, alongside practical reporting guidance and cross-references that help readers navigate how different areas of the law interact.

The latest edition has been updated to reflect significant developments in media law and regulation since 2024.

Revisions include coverage of the National Security Act 2023, new Ofcom guidance on the presentation of news programmes, the latest coroner’s Bench Book, and recommendations from the Law Commission on contempt by publication when proceedings are active.

Featuring updated case studies, practical examples and accompanying online resources, the book supports readers in applying media law confidently in practice.

Co-authored by Sian Harrison, Gill Phillips and Charlie Moloney, the 28th edition draws on extensive expertise in media law, journalism training and editorial practice.

Sian Harrison, former court reporter and law editor, said: “The new edition of McNae’s has caught up with another two years of turbulent change in the landscape of media law and regulation, and looks to upheaval coming further ahead. The ‘journalist’s bible’ remains an essential tool for navigating this landscape while avoiding pitfalls.”

Charlie Moloney, media law trainer and journalist, said: “Journalists are working in an increasingly complex media landscape, making a strong understanding of media law more important than ever.”

Gill Phillips, former director of editorial legal services for the Guardian, added: “This edition reflects significant legal and regulatory developments since 2024, ensuring readers have access to the latest guidance and practical insight.”

Joanne Forbes, chief executive of the NCTJ, said: “For more than 70 years, McNae’s Essential Law for Journalists has been an indispensable resource for journalism students and working journalists alike.

“We are proud to continue our partnership with Oxford University Press on this landmark publication and congratulate Sian, Charlie and Gill on producing another authoritative edition that reflects the latest developments in media law and regulation.”
