Four entrepreneurial journalists who met on an NCTJ-accredited course have launched their very own style magazine.

The Retro Collective is a magazine launched by Brighton-based journalists Bruce Hudson, Graeme Coop, Geraldine Spencer and Niki Corfield, who all met last year as students on the NCTJ-accredited Certificate in Journalism (Sub-editing) course at Brighton Journalist Works.

Available online or in print, the third edition of the monthly magazine is now in production.

Bruce said: “’I had an inkling of an idea for a retro-inspired online magazine and through meeting the other guys on the course was able to put a team together of qualified journalists who were looking for experience. It was a perfect match.”

The magazine focuses on retro style, a design and fashion movement which embraces classic clothing and accessories from the past. The movement is seen as big business with all major sports manufacturers now regularly releasing limited edition retro design trainers and clothing.

Bruce added: “We’re going from strength-to-strength and it does seem odd that such a massive industry didn’t have a magazine covering it.”

“The magazine was originally conceived as a portfolio showcase for us, but we are now having to rethink that as it really does seem to be getting a good reaction.”
