As National Apprenticeship Week 2020 begins, the NCTJ is proud to support the campaign, co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service.

Now in its 13th year, the campaign is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals businesses, and the wider economy.

A journalism apprenticeship is a fantastic route into a competitive industry and suits those who want to earn while they learn.

Throughout National Apprenticeship Week (3 – 9 February) the NCTJ will be sharing first-hand accounts from current and former apprentices in a range of journalism sectors to demonstrate how apprenticeships have worked for them.

The ‘trailblazer’ apprenticeship standard for a junior journalist is an industry-designed training scheme offering a career path into journalism. Apprentices complete the NCTJ level 3 Diploma in Journalism as a mandatory qualification and must gain the diploma to progress through the ‘gateway’ to the end-point assessment (EPA).

An apprenticeship as a junior journalist is aimed at those who want to develop a career in journalism by combining off-the-job learning with on-the-job training.

It is a professional, vocational training scheme that doesn’t compromise on the exacting standards that are vital in modern newsrooms.
