NCTJ chief executive discusses training developments at Society of Editors Conference
NCTJ chief executive Joanne Butcher delivered a short address at the Society of Editors Conference in Belfast today.
NCTJ chief executive Joanne Butcher delivered a short address at the Society of Editors Conference in Belfast today.
Joanne spoke about training developments within the industry and also discussed the recent Society of Editors survey into journalism training. Editors responding to the survey emphasised the need for quality training and practical work experience and respondents also noted the importance of accreditation.
Simon Bucks, associate editor at Sky News, presented the survey’s findings and the Society of Editors strategy for training, stating that a new journalist must have the following:
- A good standard of education
- The ability to tell a story well
- An absolute respect for accuracy
- A high standard of written English
- A clear understanding of media ethics and media law
- A strong grasp of practical journalistic skills
- Ideally they should have 100wpm shorthand
Following the address, Joanne and Simon took questions from audience members including Doug Wills from the Evening Standard about the importance of quality journalism training post-Leveson.
