NCTJ Chairman’s Award honours newspaper training guru

David Rowell, head of editorial learning and development at Johnston Press and NCTJ Journalism Qualifications Board member, has been honoured with the 2012 NCTJ Chairman’s Award for his outstanding contribution to journalism training and education.

David Rowell, head of editorial learning and development at Johnston Press and NCTJ Journalism Qualifications Board member, has been honoured with the 2012 NCTJ Chairman’s Award for his outstanding contribution to journalism training and education.

David was presented with his award by NCTJ chairman Kim Fletcher following the gala dinner at the Journalism Skills Conference held at Nottingham Contemporary on 28 November.

During the presentation, Kim praised David for his “exemplary” work for the NCTJ in recent years.

Kim added: “In his current role as head of editorial learning and development for Johnston Press, David has led a team of editorial trainers for the last eight years, ensuring that all journalists joining the company are properly trained and qualified.

“He has been at the forefront of preparing Johnston Press journalists for the digital revolution that is transforming our industry.”

David’s first training role was as editor of Emap Training, a role he held for seven years. He became editor-in-chief and editorial director at Northamptonshire Newspapers for a further six years before moving to the Johnston Press.

An NCTJ-trained journalist, David has previously worked as reporter and sub-editor, and edited three daily newspapers: Peterborough Evening Telegraph, Northampton Chronicle & Echo and Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph

David was a member of the NCTJ’s newspaper journalism examinations board and has been a member of the Journalism Qualifications Board since it was set up in 2008. As a member of these boards, David contributes to the continuing development of the NCTJ’s professional qualifications and advises on exam content.
