NCTJ celebrates volunteers helping to champion excellence in journalism
The NCTJ is marking Volunteers’ Week by thanking the more than 300 volunteers who give their time and expertise each year to support aspiring journalists and help shape the future of journalism.
Volunteers support the NCTJ in a wide range of ways. They mentor Journalism Diversity Fund recipients, inspire young people to consider careers in journalism, contribute industry expertise to accredited centres, support qualification development and accreditation, assist with governance, and help recognise outstanding talent through the NCTJ Awards for Excellence.
Their insight and experience help ensure journalism training reflects the needs of employers and supports people from all backgrounds to enter and succeed in the industry.
Joanne Forbes, chief executive of the NCTJ, said: “The NCTJ could not achieve what it does without the support of the hundreds of journalists and media professionals who volunteer their time and expertise each year.
“Whether they are mentoring Journalism Diversity Fund recipients, inspiring young people to consider careers in journalism, advising our centres, supporting qualification development, serving on committees or helping recognise excellence across the industry, they make a vital contribution to our work and to the future of journalism.
“Much of their support takes place behind the scenes and often alongside demanding careers, but it helps ensure that the NCTJ continues to uphold the standards, skills and knowledge that underpin quality journalism. On behalf of the NCTJ, I would like to thank every one of our volunteers for their commitment, generosity and continued support.”
The NCTJ is always keen to hear from experienced journalists and media professionals interested in supporting its work and helping to inspire the next generation of journalists.
Kim Hewitt, programme and digital editor at ITV News Meridian and NCTJ industry advisor said: “I’ve worked closely with the NCTJ and, together, we’ve helped support new NCTJ-accredited journalism courses – giving support and guidance to the next generation of news hounds.
“It’s great to be part of their training and development and, in a world of fake news, to remind the next generation of just how important a role they will play in the years ahead. And, as I always say to them, I’m always on the end of a ‘phone!”
