NCTJ celebrates National Apprenticeship Week 2025

The NCTJ is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2025 by highlighting the role apprenticeships play in developing skills and creating accessible pathways into journalism.

Taking place from 10 to 16 February, National Apprenticeship Week, from the Department for Education, celebrates the value, benefit and opportunities that apprenticeships bring.

Journalism apprenticeships are a great option for those who want to develop their career by combining off-the-job learning with on-the-job training.

It is possible to undertake a journalist apprenticeship at both junior and senior levels, with both apprenticeship standards including an industry-recognised NCTJ qualification.

Apprenticeships help to open journalism to a wider range of people, ensuring those from all backgrounds can access high-quality training and employment opportunities.

Throughout the week, the NCTJ will be sharing case studies, videos and first-hand accounts from apprentices and employers, showcasing the impact of apprenticeships on careers and newsrooms.

Joanne Forbes, chief executive of the NCTJ, said: “Apprenticeships are a fantastic route into journalism, offering hands-on experience while working towards an NCTJ qualification. They provide an alternative pathway to the university route, which we hope will make the industry more inclusive and representative.

“As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we encourage government to invest in apprenticeships and employers to consider how these programmes can support new talent and strengthen the industry.”
