The NCTJ has revealed the shortlist for the prestigious Awards for Excellence, which celebrates the outstanding achievements of journalism students, trainees and apprentices.
The NCTJ has revealed the shortlist for the prestigious Awards for Excellence, which celebrates the outstanding achievements of journalism students, trainees and apprentices.
This year, we received a record-breaking number of eligible entries, over 400, highlighting the exceptional talent emerging in the industry.
There are 72 on the shortlist across 20 categories, including news journalism, top scoop, podcast and videojournalism.
Joanne Forbes, chief executive of the NCTJ, said: “Judges across all categories have praised the high quality of this year’s entries, making the selection process tougher than ever.
“The submissions reflect the dedication, creativity and hard work of the next generation of journalists, and it’s an inspiring testament to the talent emerging from NCTJ-accredited courses and apprenticeship programmes.

The NCTJ Awards for Excellence 2024 has been supported across the media industry, with Reuters as headline sponsor and award category sponsors including Alder Media, Yahoo, Sky News, i, the Market Research Society, News UK, British Polling Council, The Telegraph, Sky Sports and the Financial Times.
The awards also feature a number of specialist categories, including innovation of the year and the equality, diversity and inclusion award. These categories recognise the outstanding contributions of training providers and employers that are pushing boundaries and promoting positive change within the industry.

Those on the shortlist will be invited to a ceremony in spring 2025, with details to be revealed in the new year.
The shortlist for student of the year and trainee of the year awards, which are based on performance in the Diploma in Journalism and the National Qualification in Journalism (NQJ), will also be announced early next year.
The winner of the chair’s award for outstanding contribution to journalism education and training will be announced at the ceremony.
