More than £123,000 invested in increasing diversity in journalism in 2012/13

The Journalism Diversity fund has invested just over £123,000 on bursaries for diverse NCTJ students in the 2012/13 academic year.
Three aspiring journalists have been awarded a Journalism Diversity Fund bursary in the final cohort of the year, taking the total number of bursaries awarded this year to 20.

The successful recipients in the fourth round of bursaries for this academic year are: Nicholas Bieber (19), Erinn Louise Kerr (22) and Anthony Lewis-Binns (26).

Erinn will be studying an NCTJ-accredited course at Press Association, Newcastle, while Nicholas and Anthony will study at News Associates, Wimbledon.

Interviews took place at BBC New Broadcasting House in London on Friday 1 February.

The panel, which consisted of Joseph Harker, assistant comment editor, The Guardian, Colleen Harris, specialist journalist, BBC, and Leo Whitlock, editor, Kentish Gazette, quizzed interviewees on their passion for journalism, financial need and diversity.

Bursaries are awarded four times a year to students studying an NCTJ-accredited course. They are awarded to students from socially or ethnically diverse backgrounds and can help them cover the cost of course fees and living expenses.

The schedule for the 2013/14 academic year is now available on the Journalism Diversity Fund website. The application deadline for the first group of bursaries will be Wednesday 3 April 2013 at 5pm.
