Dame Frances Cairncross, author of this year’s Cairncross Review into sustainable, high-quality journalism in the UK, is the keynote speaker at the NCTJ’s equality, diversity and inclusion conference 2019.

In the keynote session, Dame Frances will appear ‘in conversation with’ Kim Fletcher, chairman of the NCTJ and editor of the British Journalism Review.

The pair will discuss the importance of high-quality journalism in a challenging world, the role of training in sustaining professional news media, and how innovation can play a role in engaging audiences and therefore contributing to sustainability.

The annual conference will take place at Reuters in London on Thursday, 19 September, and invites journalists, employers and educators to discuss equality, diversity and inclusion in journalism.

The event also invites bursary recipients, mentors, sponsors and supporters to celebrate the work of the Journalism Diversity Fund, which has helped more than 340 people from diverse backgrounds train to become journalists since its launch in 2005.

Attendees will hear from two panels of journalists and industry figures on balance and fairness in reporting, and how to make entry into journalism more accessible. Former JDF bursary recipients and a former apprentice will also share their experiences of training and entering the industry.
