Peter Allen, co-presenter of Drive on BBC Radio 5 live, is to offer advice to NCTJ students at the Student Council forum at MediaCity in Salford on 10 February.

Peter completed his NCTJ training with the Southend Standard and since then has gone on to work in print, television and radio. He joined Radio 5 live at its launch in 1994 as a founding presenter of the Breakfast show and prior to this he was ITN political correspondent. He has won four Sony Gold Awards with Radio 5 live and was recently inducted into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame.

Peter will speak to student representatives from each NCTJ-accredited course about his career and experiences, and offer them some advice for the future.

Student Council members will also have the opportunity to question a panel of editors about the skills and attributes needed to succeed in today’s industry. The panel is chaired by NCTJ board member and Guardian readers’ editor Chris Elliott and features: Lynn Ashwell, deputy editor, Bolton News; Eamonn O’Neal, managing editor, MEN Media; and Michelle Mayman, TV editor, BBC North West Tonight.

In addition they will get the chance to talk to senior NCTJ staff about key issues and present their views and suggestions, before finishing the day with a tour of the BBC newsroom.
