NCTJ and Routledge to publish Essential Journalism, a new guide for trainee journalists

The NCTJ is publishing a new title, Essential Journalism, to offer a practical guide to all aspects of modern journalism for NCTJ learners.

The book, published by Routledge, will be a core resource for journalism students and trainees, as well as for seasoned practitioners and lecturers.

Jonathan Baker, founding professor of journalism at the University of Essex, is the book’s author.

An award-winning journalist and journalism teacher, Jonathan began his career as a graduate trainee on the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo before starting a long and successful career at the BBC.

He said: “This book reflects my experiences as a working journalist, and as a teacher of journalism to NCTJ students.

“It’s intended to be a straightforward, clear and practical guide to all aspects of modern multimedia journalism, of value to students and young journalists alike.”

Written in collaboration with the NCTJ, Essential Journalism outlines everything you need to know about the journalism industry today, from its ethical framework to its practice across print, television, radio, online and social media.

It looks at the core principles and the skills that are required of journalists across all platforms, helping students develop an overall understanding of the business and examining the application and adaptation of traditional best practice to the demands of the digital age.

The title is a unique one-stop shop for anyone who wants to understand the nature and purpose of journalism, and how it is changing and evolving in today’s digital newsrooms.

Francesca Unsworth, director of news and current affairs at the BBC, said: “Today's journalists need to be flexible, adaptable and multiskilled, while respecting the core values that underpin the best journalism.

“This book is about applying time-honoured principles in a digital age - and as such, should be required reading for established professionals, as well as those taking their first steps in journalism.”

The NCTJ is now taking pre-orders for Essential Journalism at the discounted price of £25.99 (RRP £32.99) ahead of its publication on 28 June 2021.
