Trainee Journalist, GlasgowWorld and the Edinburgh Evening News

We are looking for a talented, digital reporter to join the team and provide coverage for our daily city websites, GlasgowWorld and the Edinburgh Evening News.

You’ll be working in an exciting newsroom environment alongside reporters who are passionate about their city and the people who call it home. You will celebrate the hospitality scene, history, music, culture and community of both cities, capturing experiences and covering the issues that matter most to local communities at a neighbourhood level. Your focus will be on generating engaging content for the weekend alongside lifestyle and news features at key points during the week.

The successful candidate will be a trainee reporter who is a natural digital storyteller, quick to react to trending news and local content opportunities. They will also know how to present stories in an engaging way and use video to reach new audiences. The successful applicant will also be comfortable using and understanding analytics to help guide content decisions.

This full time position would involve generating content for the Glasgow and Edinburgh websites, reporting directly to the GW and EEN editors, with a mix of remote working and newsroom shifts in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Some weekend shift work will be required for this role.

What we are looking for:

  • A skilled writer and researcher who can generate their own ideas
  • A proactive journalist who is good at building contacts, interpreting data and forward planning
  • A journalist motivated by high engagement, who understands that analytics are a key barometer of content quality
  • A natural at shooting and editing video for digital platforms, including social media
  • An interest in creating content from local experiences and interviewing people in the community
  • Flexibility when it comes to working shifts and weekends, depending on the needs of the local news agenda

Skills/experience:

  • NCTJ Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Sound legal knowledge and an understanding of the IPSO code
  • Ability to take an accurate shorthand note
  • Accurate and engaging writing style
  • Able to understand and react to digital analytics
  • Skilled at using photographs for visual storytelling
  • Able to create engaging multimedia reports, including video content
