Trainee Journalist, Blackpool Gazette

The team behind the fast-growing Blackpool Gazette is looking for a talented new digital journalist to join its ranks.

As a dedicated team we are passionate about quality local journalism and like our reporters to get out into the community, meeting people face-to-face, and uncovering the best stories across Lancashire.  We love all digital storytelling mediums including video and social media channels and we are looking for someone who can jump straight in and hit the ground running in Blackpool. Blackpool is a fantastic patch to cover and has everything from strong court and crime, weird and wonderful human interest stories, politics, regeneration, deprivation, wealth and everything in between.

The position would suit a newly qualified trainee reporter looking for their first exciting challenge.

We are looking for..

• A skilled writer and researcher who can generate their own ideas and is willing to learn.

• A proactive journalist who is good at building contacts, talking to people, interpreting data and forward planning .

• A journalist motivated by high engagement, who understands that analytics are a key barometer of content quality.

• Experience with self- shooting and editing video for digital platforms, including social media

• Capable of covering court and inquests when required.

• Flexibility when it comes to working shifts and weekends, depending on the needs of the news agenda and the business

Ideally, you will have the following skills or experience:

• NCTJ Diploma or equivalent experience

• Sound legal knowledge and an understanding of the IPSO code

• Ability to take an accurate shorthand note

• Accurate and engaging writing style

• Able to understand and react to digital analytics

• Able to create engaging multimedia reports, including video content

• You will live in Blackpool or wider Lancashire and be able to drive.
