Are you a sports mad – particularly rugby league and football?

Do you have a passion for great content, quality journalism and the ability to spot a trending story?

We are looking for a talented, energetic and resourceful sports reporter to join our team!

WiganToday.net – the home patch of Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic – needs a rugby league specialist with their finger on the pulse of what’s going on at the most famous club in the world.

More about the role:

  • Leading the daily news coverage coming out of the Wigan Warriors – including matches, press conferences and training-ground chats – at all levels…men’s, women’s, academy and disability teams
  • Being able to move across and help with Wigan Athletic coverage as and when required
  • Passion for other sports would be an advantage, with Wigan being a hotbed of cricket, boxing, wrestling, MMA and golf among others, as well as a thriving amateur set-up
  • Sourcing, writing stories and taking pictures and videos and sending content to all relevant platforms at the relevant times
  • Understanding the content needs of the publishing platforms and the times/methods  to send content to them

  • Understanding the difference between unique content and that  already in the public domain and using it in accordingly

  • Works to develop and curate content through interaction with the sports communities

  • Ensuring that appropriate metadata and other information is attached to all content

  • Having a knowledge about legal, ethical and moral issues and being able to apply them accordingly

  • Being able to vision the way content should be developed and handled at the start of the gathering process

  • Having an inquiring mind and a passion for meeting and engaging with people

  • Being able to understand and engage with the local sports community

  • Ability to organise and oversee the generation and use of user generated content

  • Widely using social media in accordance with company guidelines

  • Ability to write concise and appealing headlines relevant to the different platforms

  • Ability to handle and edit video and pictures

  • Understanding of audience measurement practices relevant to the role
