The audience is very firmly at the heart of what we do and our sophisticated content analytics will give you immediate reader feedback about the online stories you work on.

This will help you hone your journalism skills, while developing a rich understanding of audience preferences and behaviours.

Your work will be seen by millions worldwide – a well-crafted, visual and engaging article produced in Scotland will find an audience not only at home but in mainland Europe, the US and beyond.

You will join a hard-working team of journalists from a variety of backgrounds and ages who, together, pride themselves on delivering the best content for our website and social media platforms.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • You will be working with designers and journalists to produce illustrations and animations using Adobe Creative tools such as Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Photoshop and Illustrator whilst maintaining professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality and fairness.
  • You will produce ideas for data-driven stories and how they could be developed and visualised for multiple platforms while also using data and visual journalism programs – including Flourish and in-house BBC tools – to create excellent content, both editorially and technically.
  • You will be committed to visual excellence and push innovative design while operating in a fast-paced news environment, usually within tight deadlines. At the heart of this role is taking complex data and presenting it in a clear and easily understood format for our audiences.
  • You will work with the BBC’s Verify team, a specialised unit of journalists who fact-check claims, verify videos and pictures; counter disinformation, analyse data and explain complex stories, all in the pursuit of truth.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Significant and evidenced experience of creating visual storytelling using a range of production techniques.
  • Be someone who has a solid track record in breaking news; can handle the pressure of breaking news and be assured in delivering unrivalled content which is accurate, speedy and impartial.
  • A willingness to experiment and try different approaches and formats in digital storytelling to reach new and different audiences. The ability to work well with other journalists, correspondents, on air editors and teams across our newsrooms and the wider BBC Scotland.
  • To carry out this senior role to the highest of standards you will need a strong knowledge of Scotland and its institutions.
  • Ability to role model the BBC’s values and be able to inspire and unite teams behind these values and behaviours, within an inclusive newsroom culture.

If you can bring some of these skills and experiences, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
