
Senior sub-editor- News UK (London)
Senior sub-editors help to produce multiple sections of The Times and The Sunday Times across all platforms. They will ensure the quality of our journalism by sub-editing news, foreign, business, comment, News Review, register and regional content, writing headlines and captions and improving copy, guaranteeing that all output remains true to the Times and Sunday Times aesthetics.
Responsibilities
- Successfully manage productive relationships with the head of news production and the senior news production team as well as the wider news production team, senior editors and journalists across both newsrooms
- Sub-edit and revise copy and write headlines and furniture to a high standard in line with the style guide
- Work a 9-day fortnight across a 7-day rota, which includes early and late shifts
- Trusted with major stories, working under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Support the head of news production and their senior team to publish on deadline on all platforms
- Understand the requirements and expectations of the various section editors
- Work with the news desks and colleagues in design, pictures, graphics and multimedia to produce sections efficiently and on deadline
- Work across all platforms, particularly when additional resources are required
- Use SEO and data tools to help guide decision making, editing and headline construction
Skills and experience
- Experience as a sub-editor on a national newspaper or news website with a demonstrable interest in current affairs and politics
- Imaginative in writing headlines and other page/digital furniture
- Strong sub-editor who can work across platforms with a proven ability to edit copy quickly, accurately and to the highest standard
- Strong experience publishing on multi-platform digital products
- A strong understanding of SEO and metadata for digital platforms
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve and negotiate positive outcomes
- Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
- Able to identify and implement efficient ways of working that raise standards
- A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
