PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are looking for Senior Journalists with Hungarian language skills to adapt and produce text and video curated from World Service Languages and wider BBC News content for BBC News Hungarian Language offer.

BBC World Service is expanding its reach to serve audiences in Hungary. BBC News brand is driven by impartiality, enriched by the world’s largest network of correspondents and supported by our commitment to combatting misinformation. We will be offering Hungarian-speaking audiences verified news and expert analysis of key events, shaping the present day in Hungary and wider region. We will prioritise explanatory and analytical content to help audiences make sense of the current developments in Europe and the world, to join the dots in a noisy environment of unverified and uncontextualized news bites. This role will work closely with other journalists to select and adapt a curated offer for the Hungarian market.

 

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Content Adaptation & Publishing – translate and edit BBC News text and video content into Hungarian, ensuring compelling SEO headlines and summaries for the BBC News Hungarian website.
  • Editorial Oversight – sub-edit content from Journalists and Senior Journalists, sign off articles for publication across web and social media, and ensure alignment with BBC editorial standards.
  • Audience-Centric Editing – shorten and adapt content sensitively, considering the needs of the Hungarian-speaking audience and BBC editorial guidelines.
  • Enhancing Engagement – use additional reporting to enrich BBC News content and propose ideas for original journalism relevant to Hungarian audiences.
  • Collaboration & Expertise Sharing – work closely with the Europe team and other BBC departments, offering insights on Hungarian politics, history, society, and culture.
  • Content Planning & Monitoring – track diary events in Hungary and the region to identify opportunities for curating and publishing relevant BBC News content.
  • Professional Standards & Innovation – uphold journalistic integrity, flag editorial issues, ensure legal and copyright compliance, suggest improvements and act up as requested by the Editor or Senior Journalist Team Manager.

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • First-language proficiency in written and spoken Hungarian.
  • High proficiency in English.
  • Writing text news articles and video scripts in Hungarian.
  • Producing short and mid-form videos
  • Sub-editing text and video in Hungarian, working to the highest linguistic and editorial standards.
  • Proven experience of writing compelling text articles and video scripts – you will be asked to provide examples of your work on your application form.
  • Production of search-engine-optimized (SEO) headlines, for Hungarian and wider European regional audiences.
  • Understanding of the Hungarian and wider European media market and current challenges to factual journalism in the country and the region.
  • Understanding of the Hungarian-speaking audience needs, especially under 35’s.
  • Visual journalism production

JOB DETAILS

JOB BAND: D

CONTRACT TYPE: 12 month Fixed Term Contract

DEPARTMENT: World Service, Global Journalism – Europe

LOCATION: UK OR other locations in Europe where the BBC has an entity (France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Serbia, Latvia) and has the right to work.

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £41,500-£43,500 per annum depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
