PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Senior Journalist will play a key role in shaping editorial priorities, leading our video and editorial teams, and growing audiences through innovative, data-led journalism and video storytelling which reaches a high proportion of young and female audiences. You will also commission and produce text stories and social assets while acting as a second pair of eyes for output quality control.
The ideal candidate will have strong editorial judgment, team management, and experience in implementing digital strategies. You will have ample opportunities to work with talented Journalists from BBC Chinese and the rest of BBC News.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
• Commission, script, edit and supervise the production of high-quality digital journalism, including explainers, original reporting, social-first content and breaking news coverage
• Lead by example as a practising video journalist, producing high-quality, high-impact video content that sets the benchmark for the wider team
• Manage, mentor and develop the Hong Kong-based team of journalists, encouraging creativity, collaboration, continuous improvement and high editorial and creative standards
• Develop and champion BBC Chinese’s video strategy, helping all team members, including those without primary video skills, to understand and contribute to its ambitions
• Use audience data, analytics and platform insights to inform commissioning, distribution, content planning and editorial decision-making
• Identify and develop new video formats, visual storytelling techniques and production innovations that increase the appeal and reach of BBC Chinese content, particularly among younger and female audiences
• Work closely with the Senior Journalist Team Manager in Taiwan to coordinate digital commissioning, share resources, align creative standards, build collaboration between Hong Kong and Taiwan teams, and avoid duplication of effort
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
· Fluency in written and spoken Chinese and English including excellent scripting, writing and sub-editing skills in Chinese
· Substantial experience as a digital journalist, with a strong portfolio of high-quality, high-impact video content produced for digital platforms
· Proven experience of leading or managing a team of video journalists or producers, including setting creative direction, managing performance and developing staff
· Demonstrable ability to set and sustain a clear creative and editorial vision for digital output, with evidence of raising production standards within a team
· Solid experience of developing or implementing video strategy within a digital news environment, with a demonstrable contribution to audience or engagement growth
· Experience of using data analytics tools to inform video commissioning and content planning decisions, and the ability to translate these insights into commissioning priorities
· Track record of commissioning or producing video content that has delivered measurable audience growth, particularly among target demographics
