PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The BBC News Ukraine team currently operates in three countries: Ukraine, Poland, and the United Kingdom; this role is based in Kyiv.
The role requires a strong understanding of video production fundamentals and will lead a team of BBC journalists working across different cities and countries. You will oversee high‑quality content across video, audio and text, lead and develop a team of journalists, and work closely with colleagues in London to drive editorial initiatives and innovation. With responsibility for upholding the BBC’s trusted editorial standards, contributing original story ideas, mentoring emerging talent and supporting staff safety, this position combines leadership and creativity and grow your career in a supportive, collaborative environment, whilst making a meaningful difference through journalism that truly matters.

BBC News Ukraine is one of the BBC World Service Language Services, reaching wide audiences both in Ukraine and globally. Its impactful multimedia content is shared via several digital platforms, including bbc.ua website and social media. The team is currently based in three locations in Ukraine, Poland and the UK. This is an opportunity to take on a lead role as Senior Journalist Team Manager.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Responsible for originating and producing stories which may include scripting, editing, outputting, filming and presenting content across a range of BBC output.
- As required, to allocate work to a team and check progress; ensure the professional contribution of staff and the quality of output. Able to lead the team on a day-to-day basis but also contribute ideas and support to the overall management of the site.
- Lead the video planning process.
- Commission and select relevant materials ensuring they meet expectations of our audiences and adhere to the BBC’s editorial.
- To act as a facilitator of change, clearly communicating and sharing best practices are shared between teams.
- May be required to present the content on radio, TV or online. This might be live or recorded.
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- The successful candidate will have a solid grasp of both Ukrainian and international news, share the editorial values of the team, possess in-depth knowledge of the Ukrainian media market, and be fluent in Ukrainian and English (both written and spoken).
- A mandatory requirement is advanced video editing skills.
- You’ll understand audience behaviour and how to increase video audience and able to use platform metrics and audience research in support of this.
- A high standard of editorial judgment, writing ability and production skills based on substantial broadcast journalism experience.
- Ability to manage resources, staff, technical facilities and budgets to make challenging broadcasting in the most cost-effective manner.
