PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: EUR 44,000 – 54,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced editor with a strong track record in producing high-impact multi-media investigations to head our original journalism/special correspondents’ team in Riga.
This role will involve managing a team of senior investigative journalists, working with them to turn good ideas into strong pieces of journalism capable of making an impact for the Russian Service and across the BBC on different platforms and outlets and in different languages. Management experience and an understanding of and background in multi-platform journalism is essential for this role.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
•    Lead a team of investigative reporters, to generate stories which matter to BBC News Russian audiences and make an impact in the Russian-speaking world
•    Work with multiple teams across the Russian Service to plan how stories are told across all our platforms and reach as many people as possible
•    Prioritise ideas and set clear deadlines for all pieces of work
•    Give guidance on story-telling and structure
•    Take a lead in liaising with the BBC’s Editorial Policy, Legal and High Risk teams on sensitive stories
•    Work to ensure key stories are shared across the BBC where they have resonance with wider audiences
•    This role is part of the Russian Service senior editorial team and the successful candidate will be expected to chair daily and weekly editorial meetings, represent the team in weekly senior management meetings, and also represent the service at wider BBC meetings as and when required

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
•    Strong Russian language writing skills as well as good knowledge of English
•    A deep understanding of Russia and of the stories that matter to audiences there, as well as a demonstrable ability to identify and research topics from outside the country
•    Advanced OSINT skills, including geolocation and satellite imagery analysis, verification of user-generated content, image and metadata analysis, public records and database research, social media investigations, and AI-assisted research workflows
•    Ability to identify, verify, and connect information from multiple open sources, supporting fact-checking, investigative reporting, and evidence-based storytelling
•    Understanding of the BBC’s editorial policy and values
•    Management experience and an understanding of and background in multi-platform journalism is also essential for this role

DESIRABLE:
•    The Russian Service has a sizeable audience among Russian-speakers in neighbouring countries around Russia, and a knowledge of this wider region is also desirable
