PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and delivering the social media output of BBC Dars Arabic, ensuring content is tailored effectively for digital audiences. They will shape and implement strategies to maximise the impact and reach of the programme across social and digital platforms, creating engaging, innovative content that resonates with young audiences across the Arabic-speaking world. Based in Cairo, the role plays a key part in expanding audience engagement and supporting the programme’s digital growth.

BBC Dars delivers high-quality educational content and impartial journalism to 11–16 year olds, particularly those who face barriers to accessing education. Following its success in Dari and Pashto, the programme has now expanded into Arabic. As part of the team, you will contribute to a unique public service mission, creating engaging content that informs, inspires and empowers young audiences across the Arabic-speaking world.

 

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

 

  • Develop and deliver an engaging social media strategy for BBC Dars Arabic, adapting programme content and creating original digital-first content that resonates with young teenage audiences.
  • Produce and publish high-quality content across social and digital platforms, ensuring output is creative, audience-focused and optimised for platform-specific requirements.
  • Maintain the highest journalistic, linguistic and production standards, ensuring all content reflects BBC values of accuracy, impartiality and fairness.
  • Ensure all output is thoroughly fact-checked, legally compliant and adheres to BBC Editorial Guidelines, with particular consideration for safeguarding, audience suitability and due balance.
  • Identify, escalate and discuss editorial risks or issues with appropriate editorial colleagues, supporting informed decision-making and maintaining editorial integrity.

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

 

  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms and digital content trends, with a passion for creating engaging content and staying ahead of emerging formats and features such as YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.
  • Proven experience creating and editing social media content, including video production, thumbnail creation and platform-optimised storytelling.
  • Experience using social listening, audience insights and analytics tools to identify content opportunities, inform strategy and drive audience growth and engagement.
  • Excellent copywriting, social media optimisation and community management skills, with the ability to create compelling content tailored to young audiences.
  • Strong editorial judgement and a commitment to maintaining high journalistic, linguistic and production standards, ensuring output is accurate, engaging and compliant with BBC Editorial Guidelines.
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, work collaboratively across teams and support colleagues in delivering high-quality content.
  • Fluent Arabic and strong English language skills, with the ability to write, edit and translate content to a high standard in both languages. Experience of television production and working with presenters is desirable.
