
Senior Journalist (Glasgow)
Radio Scotland’s three news programmes – Good Morning Scotland, Lunchtime Live and Drivetime – lead the news agenda across the country on a daily basis. We consistently break the day’s news, hold top politicians to account and highlight human interest stories that reflect Scotland’s people.
We are looking for a Senior Journalist to join the team, taking responsibility for putting together and outputting these programmes as well as leading and directing a team of journalists while on shift. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in politics, cultural life, domestic and foreign news to shape the news agenda.
This is an opportunity to lead the flagship programmes of the station, outputting in the studio and taking on the key responsibility of setting the news agenda across BBC Scotland.
This role involves overnight working in the outputting of Good Morning Scotland, plus weekend working in the programme’s production.

The role is office based at Pacific Quay, Glasgow.
Salary: £39,800 – £47,000 pro rata depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Main Responsibilities
As a Senior Journalist, some of your main responsibilities will include the following:
- Decide on the stories for the programmes and lead others on the production of items through to going live on air. This includes assigning, briefing and determining priorities.
- Strong editorial judgment, ability to make sound decisions quickly and under pressure.
- Responsible for building morale/team spirit within teams; ensuring the best use of individual skills/abilities. Encouraging team members to think about how to do things better.
- Seek ways to increase diversity in our workforce and to ensure that our output reflects the audiences we serve.
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest standards of journalism.
Are you the right candidate?
The ideal candidate will have:
- A high standard of editorial judgment, writing ability and production skills based on substantial broadcast journalism experience.
- The ability to work effectively as a member of more than one team.
- Resolve issues as necessary.
- The ability to manage resources, staff, and technical facilities, in order to make challenging broadcasting in the most cost effective manner.
- Prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources.
- A thorough understanding of the Scottish news agenda and the stories which affect our audience.
- Clear understanding of our programmes and their purpose
- Sound political judgement.
