PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are growing our digital news operation to deliver high-impact journalism across UK and global stories in both text and video. This new international team – led from Sydney and based in Singapore and London – ensures continuous global coverage and prepares our UK morning output. As a Senior Journalist, you’ll lead live coverage, craft and edit engaging content, shape digital platforms, and collaborate with BBC teams worldwide to reach and inform a broad, global audience.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

Join a dynamic team at the heart of the BBC’s global news operation, covering major UK and international stories for digital audiences. Based in our Sydney bureau, you’ll help shape the BBC’s morning offer for UK users while responding to breaking news worldwide. We’re looking for journalists passionate about fast-paced news, with strong editorial judgment and digital storytelling skills. You’ll work alongside teams covering Australian news, Streaming, and the BBC homepage. This role works across a seven-day rota.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Identify and prioritize key news stories, writing and editing concise, accurate articles and producing or commissioning engaging digital video content with strong editorial context.
  • Lead editorial coverage under time pressure, making critical decisions to ensure content is timely, accessible, and rich in quality.
  • Respond swiftly to breaking news, craft compelling leads, develop story angles, and create multimedia elements that enhance storytelling.
  • Utilize audience insights, including social media trends and search data, to shape coverage and attract new readers.
  • Curate front pages across web and app editions, tailoring presentation to maximize engagement across diverse audiences.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Experience of writing and editing fast-paced, breaking news coverage in text for digital platforms with
    attention to accuracy, context and tone
  • Proven understanding of the formats, tools, and techniques used to produce rolling news coverage including
    live pages, text news stories and video clips and edits for digital platforms
  • Proven awareness of the distinctive nature and requirements of live digital coverage
  • Experience of using curation tools, social media, search and audience data to improve digital storytelling,
    broaden our editorial agenda and reach new audiences
  • A track record of covering the UK and international news agenda so you can work swiftly and make
    decisions under pressure on big global and UK stories
  • Excellent editorial judgement and a proven understanding of the BBC’s editorial values
  • The ability to lead small groups of journalists in coverage and experience of working remotely with teams in
    different departments and/or regions.
