PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £40,000 – £50,000 per annum depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Purpose Of The Role

BBC Sport is seeking a Senior Journalist to join the team for a busy summer. Senior journalists perform a variety of roles from subbing and curating written content for the BBC Sport website and app to organising our compelling live coverage of major events.

 

A key part of our editorial team, you will be responsible for ensuring everything you publish meets the BBC’s high standards and curating content in a way that showcases the broad range that is produced in a coherent way that engages audiences.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

 

  • Ensure every piece of content you publish meets the BBC’s high standards; it is accurate, fair and impartial and adheres to the BBC’s editorial guidelines.
  • Take control of the BBC Sport homepage across all digital platforms, using editorial judgement and flair to showcase the best of our content.
  • Make editorial decisions quickly and confidently with the ability to respond calmly and positively to changing events and circumstances.
  • Use audience insight and performance data in decision-making to optimise content performance and maximise reach and engagement.
  • Feed back to writers and commissioners to drive continuous improvement.
  • Build relationships both in the team and more broadly in the BBC

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

 

  • A keen eye for detail and extensive experience in journalism, particularly subbing.
  • Significant experience of curation/indexing
  • A passion for the stories that are generated by sport, not only by the stars but underserved members of society.
  • A good understanding of how to optimise storytelling
  • Demonstrate a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understand how individual differences can benefit the workplace and output.
  • Ability to deliver content that engages under-served and diverse audiences.
  • Strong editorial judgement, resilience, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Digital storytelling flair and deep understanding of the fast-paced digital media landscape.
  • Experience working across multiple platforms
  • Familiarity with BBC editorial standards.
  • Knowledge and experience of using analytics and performance metrics.
