LOCATION: Media City UK, Salford – Hybrid.
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £44,000 – £54,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Join BBC Sport and play a key role in shaping the biggest sports stories of the day for audiences across the UK. As a Senior Journalist, you’ll plan coverage of major sports events, sports news and produce high-quality content across BBC Sport platforms. This role is pivotal to delivering trusted, accurate and agenda-setting sports journalism that reflects the breadth of UK audiences.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
The BBC Sport Stories Planning plans news coverage, evergreen content and logistics for online, social, TV and radio. It develops original journalism ideas and works with the wider Stories team to ensure maximum news coverage for our audiences.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Lead the planning of individual sport events and news coverage
- Content commissioning and delivering feedback on ideas submitted.
- Manage logistics, planning systems and planning documents.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across Sport and the wider BBC—including radio, TV and regions—to deliver joined‑up and impactful journalism.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Strong editorial judgement and Journalism experience
- Experience of managing key relationships, hosting meetings, and ensuring collaboration between several stakeholders
- Drive ideas and creativity across platforms with experience in delivering text, video, or audio content – where experience varies, a willingness to learn and upskill
- Experience of commissioning and overseeing content and providing feedback
- Strong organisational skills – help manage logistics, planning systems and planning documents
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
- Familiarity with how audiences engage with sports content across different BBC platforms.
- Experience producing longer‑form journalism such as features, explainers or analysis.
- Understanding of social trends and what sports audiences are talking about.
- A passion for broadening the diversity and representation within sports coverage.
