PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Bangkok shoot/edit is a critical role in the Bangkok Bureau.  Working with the correspondent and the producer, you will be responsible for filming and editing and bringing a range of stories to life from Thailand and across south east Asia for BBC platforms. There will be a strong focus on digital output.  You will need demonstrable experience of producing content that works on digital platforms with the ability to film and edit creatively to engage young audiences.  You will also have the vision to experiment with digital video formats.
BBC News brings together Network News, English Regions and Global News’ English and Language Services to serve a large variety of audiences in the UK and around the world on many platforms.
At the heart of this structure, the World News Content Team provides international news reports, pictures and audio material to all BBC News programmes and services – both in the UK and internationally – in English and other languages.
The Bangkok Bureau is a busy office, covering a range of stories from across Thailand and the countries of SE Asia and is managed by the Asia Pacific Bureaux Editor based in Beijing.

 

WHY JOIN THE TEAM
The Bangkok Bureau is strategically placed in the heart of SE Asia to generate a range of stories and news about regional and global alliances, the influence of China in the region and the United States.  Aside from news and breaking news, you will have the ability to work with the team to identify themes that drive the region and to translate those themes into compelling, impactful journalism for our global audiences.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
•    Working with the Correspondent and Producer you will be expected to help drive content from the region, identifying under-reported stories and playing a key role in development of pitches with a clear understanding of the BBC’s risk management and editorial policy
•    You will be expected to work alongside and collaborate with our Language Service colleagues in the region
•    You will need to be engaged with the challenge of reaching underserved audiences with the most creative storytelling formats possible and keen to experiment with new formats and styles of reporting on different platforms
•    Contribute editorially to team discussions and come up with your own story ideas from across the region
•    Willing and adept at passing on skills through training and mentoring
•    Willing to undertake HEFAT and be asked to consider working in those environments
•    To take responsibility for camera, sound and personal broadcast equipment and fulfil duties unsupervised
•    To keep the Bangkok library database updated and to routinely edit rushes for library storage
•    There may be regular travel away from your home base and flexible working is required given the unpredictable nature of news stories

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
•    Routinely self-shoots and edits complete packages to a high level for all platforms, including working alongside on-air editors and correspondents or in specialist editorial areas, and is able to take editorial decisions in the absence of other guidance
•    Ability to understand and recognize stories in SE Asia that work for an international audience. Ability to work on those stories from ideation to production on any given platform
•    A clear understanding of World News Content’s digital newsgathering strategy in the region and ideas about how we can build and service new audiences
•    Demonstrates a clear editorial understanding of SE Asia – and to develop and build on your editorial knowledge on an ongoing basis
•    Demonstrates an understanding of the context and editorial merit of any given story you are working on with the ability to develop the story and themes into compelling pictures and sequences that grab and expand our audiences
•    Enthusiastic about reporting a wide-range of political, economic, social and cultural stories from across Thailand and the wider SE Asia region and knowledgeable about current events, challenges and sensitivities of reporting from Thailand and SE Asia
•    Relevant driving licence and driving history acceptable to BBC Insurance
