PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

 

The Senior Journalist will play a key role in the editorial planning, production and delivery of BBC Dars Arabic content across television, audio and digital platforms. Working as part of a small team, they will originate and develop story ideas, coordinate multiplatform production, and help ensure content is engaging, accurate and relevant for young audiences. The role also involves supporting colleagues, contributing to editorial decision-making, and acting as a representative of the BBC Dars Arabic team with internal and external contacts when required.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

 

  • Commission and coordinate educational and journalistic content across TV, audio, digital and social platforms, working closely with education consultants to ensure content is accurate, engaging and audience-focused.
  • Generate, assign and develop story ideas, briefing presenters, producers and video journalists, and shaping treatments to maximise multiplatform impact and value.
  • Oversee the production and delivery of content across television, radio and digital channels, ensuring output is delivered on time and to the highest editorial standards.
  • Ensure all content is thoroughly fact-checked, legally compliant and aligned with BBC Editorial Guidelines, escalating editorial issues where appropriate.
  • Support and guide journalists throughout the production process, helping to maintain high-quality, creative and relevant content for young audiences.
  • Use audience insights, analytics and digital best practice to help grow engagement and reach across digital and social platforms.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with colleagues across BBC Arabic and the wider BBC, contributing to effective cross-team working and content development.

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

 

  • Significant experience in broadcast and digital journalism, with a strong track record of commissioning, producing and delivering high-quality content across television, audio and digital platforms.
  • Experience overseeing studio-based television production, working with presenters and production teams to deliver engaging output to a high editorial and production standard.
  • Strong editorial judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure and ensure content is accurate, legally compliant and aligned with BBC Editorial Guidelines.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills, with experience commissioning stories, managing complex workflows and delivering content to deadlines across multiple platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to support, influence and collaborate effectively with colleagues, contributors, presenters and external stakeholders.
  • Proven understanding of digital audience engagement, including the use of analytics, audience insights and platform best practice to maximise reach and impact.
  • Fluent Arabic and excellent English language skills, with the ability to write, edit, rewrite and translate content to a high standard in both languages.
