PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

 

BBC World Service has established a new Regional Journalism team, bringing together newsgathering and production teams to deliver distinctive, original, and agenda-setting journalism that resonates with audiences locally, regionally, and globally. This integrated approach enables us to respond more effectively to audience needs, pursue ambitious storytelling, and strengthen our impact across platforms.

As part of this strategy, we are realigning our footprint across Africa to areas with the greatest potential for audience growth and engagement.

The successful candidate will play a key role in expanding our reach, deepening audience connection, and delivering innovative storytelling that differentiates the BBC in a highly competitive digital landscape.

 

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Create distinctive, high impact video journalism by identifying original stories, fresh angles and emerging trends that engage audiences across digital platforms.
  • Produce compelling visual stories from concept to delivery, making strong editorial decisions on reporting, filming, scripting and narrative structure.
  • Build and maintain strong source networks to secure exclusive content, expert contributors and deeper access to stories.
  • Deliver high quality video content for major news events and breaking stories, working quickly and confidently while maintaining BBC editorial standards.
  • Innovate with new formats, storytelling techniques and audience engagement approaches to keep pace with changing digital and social media trends.
  • Collaborate closely with editors, designers and social media teams to maximise the impact, reach and quality of video output across platforms.
  • Apply an audience first mindset, using visual storytelling, platform expertise and efficient production workflows to create content that informs, resonates and drives engagement.

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Strong visual storytelling skills, with the ability to identify and create compelling video content that captures attention and engages audiences across digital platforms.
  • Excellent editorial judgement and story development skills, with experience shaping narratives, making independent decisions and delivering high quality journalism under pressure.
  • Proven ability to produce content for multiple formats and platforms, including vertical, square and horizontal video, with a strong understanding of audience behaviours and platform performance.
  • Strong production planning and organisational skills, with experience managing shoots, contributors, locations and deadlines in fast moving environments.
  • Good understanding of digital video best practice, including subtitles, graphics, content optimisation, platform algorithms and audience engagement techniques.
  • Knowledge of editorial compliance, copyright, safety and ethical reporting standards, with the ability to work responsibly in sensitive situations.
  • Fluent in English and Swahili or French, with a good understanding of the political, social and cultural landscape, and the needs of audiences in DR Congo and wider Great Lakes region.
