Political social video producer (casual) – The Sun
Join The Sun as a political social video producer, creating engaging Westminster and political content for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
The Sun is looking for a creative, high-energy political social video producer to join our Lobby team and expanding video department. This is a high-impact role designed to elevate our political coverage and drive the national debate through ‘social-first’ storytelling.
You will be embedded at the heart of the action in Westminster, working in our political team to ensure The Sun remains the fastest and most engaging voice in British politics. While primarily based in Parliament, you will also collaborate with the wider newsroom at our London Bridge headquarters.
Your role
As a key member of our social video team, you will bridge the gap between hard-hitting political journalism and viral digital content. You won’t just be recording clips; you will be conceptualising and executing a visual strategy that wins on every platform.
Day to day you will
- Rapid content creation: source, edit and upload high-quality video content tailored for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts
- End-to-end production: independently conceive, shoot and package video in direct response to the daily political news agenda
- Creative adaptation: turn long-form journalism or print exclusives into snappy, shareable edits with compelling voiceovers, text and graphics
- Trend mastery: maintain an acute awareness of real-time social trends, trending sounds and the cultural zeitgeist to keep our coverage ahead of the competition
- Strategic growth: use social media analytics (engagement, views, completion rates) to optimise content for platform algorithms and guide future strategy
- Talent collaboration: source and collaborate with on-screen talent to create unique, personality-driven political content
- Technical management: manage the placement and timing of content across various content management system (CMS) platforms, ensuring all technical requirements (aspect ratios, metadata, thumbnails) are met
What we’re looking for from you
We are looking for a self-starter who thrives under the pressure of a busy newsroom and has a ‘notebook full of ideas’.
- Professional experience: at least two years’ experience working as a video producer or video journalist in a fast-paced digital news or entertainment environment
- Technical proficiency: expert-level editing skills in Adobe Premiere and experience with filming, lighting and sound
- Editorial judgement: a deep understanding of the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) Editors’ Code of Practice, media law and ethical considerations
- Political insight: a strong knowledge of UK politics and current affairs
- Digital savvy: proven knowledge of social media, search engine optimisation (SEO), online publishing and content monetisation
- Speed and accuracy: the ability to source high-quality third-party footage and user-generated content (UGC) to break news faster than our competitors without sacrificing rigorous accuracy
