News Editor – The Oxford Mail

A rare opportunity is available for a digital-focused news editor to help lead one of Newsquest’s flagship daily brands, the Oxford Mail.

We are on the hunt for a first-class newsdesk leader to shape the daily agenda of one of the UK’s fastest-growing regional brands.

Working alongside another digital news editor and print news editor, reporting directly to the Regional Editor, you will either be a proven news editor at a similar-sized title or a top journalist looking for a step-up into management.

The Oxford Mail has become one of the company’s leading titles in the past few years, with unprecedented levels of digital audience growth, a top-three print performance for a Newsquest daily in 2025, and a recent finalist for Large News Brand of the Year at the Regional Press Awards.

You will join an expanding team with a proven track record of agenda-setting journalism and follow in the footsteps of our departing Digital Audience and Content Editor, who has been promoted to take on an Editor role within the business.

We are on the lookout for someone who is a newshound first and foremost, unflappable under pressure and has a competitive spirit and a drive to help our team grow and be the best in the business.

Key Responsibilities

From leading conference to presenting the news list to the Regional Editor, editing stories, creating content plans, coaching and developing our reporters on the ground and developing skills across homepage management, subscriptions, SEO, social media and newsletters – this is a fast-paced and varied role at the heart of our news operation.

You will work alongside a team of Audience and Content Editors, motivating, mentoring and developing the reporting team, and helping them get the very best out of their stories online and help us grow our audience.

We are looking for people who are creative, digitally savvy, understand the needs and pressures of a modern newsroom and want to help us deliver the best possible products to our audience.

You will have an excellent knowledge of media law and will be comfortable dealing with members of the public.
