PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

This is a critical role at the heart of BBC News, driving the daily agenda through strong editorial leadership and sound judgement. The Executive News Editor will apply the BBC’s editorial guidelines to make key decisions, across the output, on highly complex stories. This role will also help lead the digital transformation of the newsroom, manage demand and broaden the story mix.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

•    Develop and implement a vision to deliver high quality, distinctive news across multiple platforms.
•    Ensure BBC News upholds the highest editorial standards, managing legal and editorial risk and ensuring output complies with the BBC’s editorial guidelines.
•    To drive the daily editorial agenda, ensuring BBC News is leading on breaking news, as well as delivering exclusive original content and broadening the agenda to reach new audiences.
•    To provide creative leadership and editorial vision to enhance the strength, depth, range and quality of output and ensure this is done in line with the strategic priorities of BBC News.
•    To provide leadership and direction at the heart of the newsroom, making key decisions on complex and difficult areas of the editorial.
•    To work collaboratively across News Group and the wider BBC to ensure a consistent and coherent approach.
•    To guard the BBC’s journalistic and editorial standards, support the BBC brand and enhance reach, reputation and the impact of the BBC, responding to complaints and comments if required.
•    To be an inspiring leader at the heart of the newsroom, supporting staff and their development.
•    To be a significant lead on team management activities including recruitment, development, training and employee relations.
•    To be responsible for delivery to designated budget and for pro-actively identifying solutions to address budgetary pressures and potential overspends that may arise.
•    To regularly review the performance of each team to establish current performance and set appropriate objectives.
•    To ensure health and safety responsibilities and legal obligations are understood and met within the teams and areas under their responsibility.
•    To seek out and nurture new diverse staff, on and off air.
•    To represent the BBC at a senior level and take accountability for the implementation and delivery of wider BBC projects.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

•    Extensive editorial leadership experience in News, at a network level, with a deep understanding of the news and current affairs.
•    Evidence of driving significant digital transformation within a highly matrixed environment.
•    A proven track record in managing numerous and diverse senior and executive level stakeholders both internal and external, and including governmental stakeholders.
•    Significant understanding of current markets, trends and issues within the news industry and wider broadcast sector and a deep knowledge of news output.
•    Experience of leading teams at a major media organisation, with a detailed understanding of what it takes to produce high quality, agenda-setting digital and broadcast journalism.
