PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Middle East Business Correspondent to provide expert and engaging reporting and analysis at a critical time for the global economy. This is a demanding role with a focus on delivering high-impact journalism across all of BBC News’ digital and linear platforms as well as fronting business slots, bringing fresh perspectives on the global economy, with a particular focus on the Middle East.

The role requires an ability to explain clearly issues of global complexity to general news audiences in the UK and around the world.  Your detailed knowledge of business and economics in the Middle East combined with your expert storytelling skills means you will be able to convey in an engaging and accessible manner how these complex subjects affect jobs, companies and economies in the region, along with their wider impact on the global economy.

 

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

 

The Money, Work and Technology team reports on stories of regional and global importance, providing insightful analysis, original stories and explanatory journalism for audiences in the UK and around the world.  We report on business, economics and technology for all of the BBC’s platforms – digital, television and radio.  Our reporting is accurate, impartial and clearly explains complex topics to a wide audience.

 

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

 

  • Deliver live reporting across digital, TV and radio platforms with authority and warmth, including responding to breaking news rapidly and accurately on air
  • Front business news slots and broadcast live events in accordance with BBC editorial guidelines, always ensuring impartiality and fairness
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders across the BBC including BBC Studios, to support and advance the BBC’s objectives in the Middle East
  • Develop a strong network of sources and contacts within the region to advance original journalism, breaking news and the BBC’s broader relationships
  • Communicate complex business topics clearly and confidently, making them accessible to a broad, non-specialist audience
  • Deliver original stories and news-making interviews with key business figures
  • Influence the editorial direction of business slots by generating ideas and stories and contributing to the creative treatment of an item or broadcast
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment by meeting tight deadlines, adapting quickly, and collaborating effectively with teams and stakeholders across the BBC
  • Work independently under tight deadlines while collaborating effectively with teams both on-site and remotely

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

 

  • Demonstrated track record of securing exclusive stories and high-profile interviews across TV, radio, and digital platforms
  • Strong knowledge of global business and economics, with deep understanding of the Middle East and its geopolitical and cultural context
  • Excellent editorial judgement, with the ability to quickly evaluate stories and simplify complex topics for broad audiences
  • Highly skilled broadcaster, experienced in live reporting and presentation, with a clear sense of what makes compelling content
  • Extensive journalism experience with a global outlook, capable of covering and breaking news from across international markets
  • Outstanding writing and storytelling skills across formats, including scripts, digital content, and engaging multimedia packages
  • Adaptable, self-motivated professional who thrives under pressure, manages multiple priorities, and works effectively across diverse, global teams
