Lawyer, Editorial – News UK (London)

The Team:  The Sun is Britain’s biggest-selling newspaper and largest mobile news brand with a talented, diverse team who publish the best news, sport, showbiz and lifestyle coverage in the business across print and digital.  The Sun legal team is seeking an editorial lawyer to work in its editorial legal team advising The Sun, the Sun on Sunday and Sun Online. In addition, you will assist as an editorial lawyer across NewsUK’s broadcast titles.

Your Role:

As an NGN Editorial Lawyer you will:

  • Provide expert advice for The Sun, Sun on Sunday and Sun online ensuring your advice complies with all current legislation, regulations and best practice.
  • Provide editorial legal advice to News Broadcasting titles.
  • You will be responsible for exercising sound professional judgement in providing advice to editors and journalists pre and post publication in a fast-paced environment.
  • You will be working with the legal team to identify and discuss significant issues, reporting to the head of department.

What we’re looking for from you:

  • You will ideally be a solicitor or barrister with post qualification experience in media law or litigation
  • Experience advising on pre- publication issues, including libel, privacy, contempt, copyright, Data Protection and reporting restrictions and managing complaints and post- publication matters preferred but not essential
  • You have a strong interest in free speech issues, public interest, and investigative journalism
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain and present problems/ issues to others and contribute to their resolution
  • You are able to interact positively at all levels as part of a legal department, reporting to the head of department
  • You are able to work well unsupervised, demonstrating initiative and the ability to be proactive, while also being able to follow instructions and provide support to legal team and head of department
  • You will carry out all responsibilities in a way which supports the company’s values and promotes its high ethical standards and its equal opportunities and diversity principles.
