DEPARTMENT: BBC Nations and Regions
LOCATION: Swindon
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £27,300 – £35,000 pro rata, per annum depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are looking for a talented journalist with extensive digital writing experience with the ability to work in a multimedia way across TV and radio. You’ll be an experienced journalist who knows the issues that make the people of Wiltshire tick, what are the most important subjects to people that live in communities such as Devizes and Trowbridge, what issues drive bigger areas such as Swindon, and know what the latest is in Salisbury. We want someone who can bring in stories and deliver them across multiple platforms. You’ll be part of a brilliant team based in Swindon, but want to root out the best stories across the whole patch.
You’ll be able to work to tight deadlines, make contacts and find stories. We want someone who can do more than turn around press releases – we want original journalism that helps reflect Wiltshire’s diversity with a focus on working families and underserved audiences.

 

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

You will cover the full range of news stories from across the county for online, radio and TV. You will be responsible for researching and writing and recording stories and dealing with breaking news. You will get behind the headlines, explaining issues and producing features to engage and inform our audiences.
The role is based at BBC Radio Wiltshire in Swindon and is predominantly office based.

 

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

You’ll report to the news editor in Swindon and be expected to deliver tight, well-written copy which will feature on the BBC News website. You will help to set up interviews and items for BBC Radio Wiltshire, as well as deliver either voice pieces or clips for bulletins. Your work could feature across our social channels, and you may be expected to record interviews for our TV output.

 

  • Report quickly and accurately the news stories of the day – from breaking news to social issues.
  • Produce original journalism by using a wide range of contacts and sources and identify innovative story ideas and treatments for an online audience.
  • Come up with investigation and feature ideas that help us represent different audiences
  • Report on news stories in the field and from the office, conduct interviews, attend media conferences, live events and report from court.
  • Work as an integral part of the BBC Wiltshire news team, working alongside producers, correspondents and reporters in the West, as well as the wider BBC.
  • Deliver to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

You’ll be a digital native – and comfortable writing and producing content across websites and social channels. You’ll be confident conducting interviews, and have a voice that works for radio.

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA :

  • Proven ability to deliver original journalism
  • Digital writing
  • Radio production
  • TV shoot/edit skills
  • The ability to tell complex stories in an engaging way using a variety of text, video and social media

 

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED :

  • The ability to build and maintain a range of contacts and sources
  • An understanding of the web and social media, ability to identify shareable content, create, package and sell it
  • A willingness to experiment and try different approaches in digital storytelling to reach new and different audiences
