PROPOSED SALARY RANGE:  £28,400 – £38,750 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

 

The BBC News weekend live page team produces and runs live new blogs on breaking news and the biggest stories in the world, attracting millions of people to our pages. Our pages are often the most prominent part of the BBC news website. As part of the weekend digital team you’ll help to drive the pages by writing and using pictures, videos, and live streams to bring audiences fast, insightful coverage.

The weekend digital team manages and writes a wide variety of live content – anything from global conflicts to music festivals. No two shifts are the same. It’s a busy, varied role working in a very prominent team, where sharp succinct writing is valued. We encourage members of the team to bring fresh ideas and perspectives on pages that can expand our appeal to broader audiences, especially younger people. Live journalists have had the chance to file reports into our pages from award ceremonies, court cases and at different BBC bureaux.

 

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITES AND IMPACT

  • Writing breaking news posts for digital news live pages/blogs as well as bylined original reporting and explanatory posts
  • Monitoring, clipping and uploading relevant videos for use in pages
  • Working with multiple teams and correspondents across the BBC to showcase our reach and expertise in the live pages
  • Responsible for fair and impartial reporting, in line with the BBC’s editorial guidelines and values.
  • Pitching ideas for creative posts and stories to cover live
  • Opportunities to work on the BBC website news desk as well as the digital video team

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE – KEY CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Experience writing quick, incisive breaking news for digital news platforms
  • A track record of covering the UK and/or international news in a fast-paced newsroom with accuracy, speed, and flair
  • Awareness of the distinctive nature of live coverage
  • A proven capacity to generate ideas, chase leads and work collaboratively on stories
  • Ability to work shifts with the BBC’s digital weekend team

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • Familiarity with using social media, search and audience data to improve storytelling and broaden reach
  • Eagerness to deliver high quality video that brings audiences closer to the story
  • An interest in new approaches to covering digital news and fresh ideas for which stories we cover – and how
