BBC World Service is an international news provider, part of BBC News, delivering a wide range of language and regional services on digital, TV and radio. It reaches a weekly audience of around 364 million around the world, helping them make sense of the world we live in.
BBC News Thai brings quality, impartial, original journalism to Thai- speaking audiences in Thailand and around the world on digital. Its multimedia content, available on www.bbc.com/thai and on social media platforms, reaches 1.8 million people on a weekly basis.
Main Responsibilities
- Produce engaging original content for publication in BBC News Thai’s digital platforms.
- Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, gather, write, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
- Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
- Use metric analytics to contribute story ideas that will have impact with BBC News Thai’s audiences.
- Adapt, translate and curate digital content and videos for Thai-speaking audiences.
- Undertake interviewing and reporting duties, under broad direction in both recorded and live situations, in studio or on location.
- May be required to present the content on multiple platforms. This might be live or recorded.
- Ensure that the BBC Editorial guidelines and all relevant legal, contractual and copyright requirements are met, referring up in case of difficulty or doubt.
- All producers may be required to travel off base on short reporting trips and assignments.
- Demonstrate the skills to produce and present content in Thai. This might be live or recorded.
- Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
- Undertake pre- and post-production and studio work, live and pre-recorded.
- Liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC, to ensure that output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is upheld.
- Take a lead within a team setting or on delivering a specific piece of journalism or project as appropriate.
- Tailor different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve.
- Prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources available.
- Produce engaging content through a range of production skills.
- Deliver to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
- At all times, carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.
- Be able to work flexibly including early/late shifts, weekends and public holidays.
Are you the Right Candidate?
- Significant recent experience as a journalist, particularly covering Thailand, Asia and global news and current affairs.
- Proven experience in breaking news stories as well as a good knowledge of production techniques across platforms.
- A full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Thai as first (or equivalent) language as well as complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
- A clear understanding of the needs and profile of the target audience and the ability to translate this into imaginative and compelling digital content ideas.
- Demonstrable experience in producing impactful content, including explainers and analysis pieces.
- Proven skills in finding first-person stories and creating content that engages the audience.
- Experience of using data analytics to shape content and meet the needs of different audience groups.
- Thorough knowledge of news and current affairs in Thailand and Asia, as well as around the world.
- Excellent knowledge of social media platforms and digital video, including the latest developments in the target market.
- Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
- Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.
- Effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
- Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
- The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
