PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

 

As a Journalist on BBC Arabic’s award-winning BBC Dars programme, you will create engaging, accurate and impartial multimedia content for young Arabic-speaking audiences, particularly those with limited access to education. Working across TV, audio, digital and social platforms, you will help deliver inspiring educational and journalistic content that informs, educates and empowers 11–16 year olds. The role supports BBC Arabic’s mission to provide trusted, high-quality output that reflects BBC Values and reaches audiences across the Middle East and beyond.

This is a permanent role that will be based in the BBC Cairo Bureau in Egypt and will be on local Egyptian terms and conditions of employment. Working hours per week will be 40 hours.

As part of the team, you will contribute to a unique public service mission, creating engaging content that informs, inspires and empowers young audiences across the Arabic-speaking world.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

 

  • Research, develop and produce engaging educational and journalistic content for TV, audio, digital and social platforms, tailored to young Arabic-speaking audiences aged 11–16.
  • Write accurate, creative and compelling scripts in Arabic, adapting stories and complex topics into content that is relevant and accessible for younger audiences.
  • Identify, develop and pitch original story ideas that work effectively across video, audio and digital formats, demonstrating strong editorial judgement.
  • Create and edit multimedia content, sourcing footage and assets as required, and ensuring output meets the editorial and technical requirements of different platforms.
  • Work closely with producers, presenters and production teams to deliver high-quality content to agreed briefs, specifications and deadlines.
  • Translate and adapt content accurately between Arabic and English, maintaining the BBC’s standards of accuracy, impartiality and quality.
  • Keep up to date with emerging digital and social media storytelling techniques, identifying new approaches that enhance audience engagement and reach.

 

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

 

  • Strong understanding of how to create engaging content across television, audio, digital and social platforms, with a particular focus on young audiences.
  • Excellent knowledge of young audiences across the Arabic-speaking region and the ability to adapt stories and editorial approaches for 11–16 year olds.
  • Demonstrable experience researching, developing and writing accurate, engaging and creative scripts for television and digital video content.
  • Proven editorial judgement, with a track record of identifying compelling stories and developing content that works effectively across multiple formats.
  • Fluent in Modern Standard Arabic and English, with excellent writing skills in Arabic and the ability to translate and adapt content accurately between both languages.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to work proactively, respond to editorial direction and consistently deliver high-quality output to tight deadlines.
  • Good understanding of digital and social media storytelling, including emerging trends, platform requirements and audience engagement techniques; experience of video and/or audio editing is desirable.
