CONTRACT TYPE: 1 x Permanent, Full-Time & 1 x Attachment / Fixed-term Contract until 18/02/2026
DEPARTMENT: BBC News Online Scotland
LOCATION: Pacific Quay, Glasgow – although being based in another BBC Scotland newsroom would be considered
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £27,300 to £35,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • As a Journalist with the BBC Scotland news online team you will work in a shift system that runs across seven days of the week covering the hours of 6am to 11pm.
  • You will work with other online journalists and newsroom reporters, correspondents and editors.
  • You will find and write a range of stories from breaking news to those with complex and data-rich themes; give them headlines and source and edit pictures.
  • In this role you will need to understand the importance of impartiality; have editorial experience and sound judgement.
  • You will communicate well with the wider BBC Scotland news operation and contribute in editorial and project meetings.
  • When speaking to members of the public and responding to feedback from our audience you will be courteous, clear and understand you are representing the best the BBC can be.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • A good knowledge of Scotland and its institutions is vital to carrying out this role to a high standard.
  • We are looking for someone who can handle the pressure of breaking news and be assured in delivering unrivalled content which is both accurate and speedy.
  • You will be able to contribute and develop original ideas, write articles and headlines, and source appropriate pictures and other media.
  • You will need to be comfortable and confident that at times you will be working early and late in a small online team. Equally, you will be comfortable and confident working with BBC journalists in all of our bases, be they in Scotland or elsewhere in the world.
  • You will need to be adaptable to the ever-growing demands of a digital working environment, embracing technological change and be quick to understand the latest trends in delivering news.
