Step Up internship: sample job specification

The Travel Media Awards Step Up scheme is an internship looking to drive diversity and inclusion for young people in travel media. It aims to open opportunities to people aged 18-30 from underrepresented backgrounds to gain experience and mentorship in travel media.
Each of the selected partners has a different yet integral role in the industry, spanning publishing, journalism, public relations and marketing. Each winner will undertake placements at two of the partner companies – four weeks per placement. For 2025, we have an expanded list of partner companies involved in the scheme.

  • The Sun & Virgin Atlantic

The Travel Media Awards Step Up internship offers:

  • Four-week placements at two of the partner companies (eight weeks in total)
  • Six months of mentorship with a travel media professional
  • Ticket to the Travel Media Awards 2025

Step Up interns will support the partners’ editorial, PR and marketing teams with a range of tasks, including some admin. Each of the placements will provide the opportunity to explore a different facet of the travel media industry. All applicants would be expected to follow the outlined workplace conduct.

Interns’ responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Editorial

  • Researching and pitching ideas for print and digital platforms
  • Writing topical multimedia stories (including social media copy)
  • Supporting the events team with upcoming launches
  • Uploading digital articles and social media posts
  • Learning how publications commission, edit and sub-edit features
  • Picture researching if required
  • Working with different CMS platforms
  • Attending and supporting events if required
  • Editorial assistant admin duties including answering emails, assisting editors and talking to PRs
  • Learning how different teams work within an editorial office

PR and Marketing

  • Producing press releases and pitches for editors and journalists
  • Tracking the performance and coverage of PR clients in media
  • Researching potential clients for social media campaigns and press trips
  • Creating monthly content calendars for PR and social clients
  • Building relationships with clients, journalists and editors
  • Attending and supporting events if required
