Foreign Editor – The Sunday Times

The foreign editor, Sunday Times, is responsible for delivering a distinctive, agenda-setting foreign news package across all platforms for The Sunday Times. Ensuring world-class standards of digital and print journalism, and working as an integral part of the foreign editorial team as we embrace digital-first commissioning and publishing.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Successfully manage productive relationships with the editor and deputy editor, the seven-day foreign editor and foreign desk team and the head of news as well as other section editors
  • Work with the the senior editorial team and foreign correspondents to conceive and deliver exclusive agenda-setting foreign news stories, features and comment ideas for digital audiences
  • Pitch exclusive video, polls, interactive graphics and audio ideas to engage our digital audience and plan how these stories are shared and promoted online
  • Attend news conference as required and present the foreign news list to the editor
  • Build and maintain excellent contacts
  • Demonstrate an understanding of what works best for digital, offering content that is truly distinctive
  • Have the ability to write with authority and command the respect of our readers
  • Forward-plan, pitch and deliver long-range projects and investigations
  • Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and to promote Sunday Times foreign content
  • Represent The Sunday Times on radio and TV, for eg. on Times Radio
  • Assist the seven-day foreign editor with people and budget management

 

Skills and experience: 

 

  • Experience working as a news journalist for a national newspaper or website
  • Strong contacts and a proven ability to bring in exclusive stories
  • Experience helping to manage people and budgets
  • An understanding of how audience data supports pitching and commissioning and how to promote a story on social media and through search engines
  • Knows how to attract and retain new audiences
  • An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy, while juggling multiple projects
  • Experience of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to communicate succinctly and effectively
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
