PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: $160,000-$200,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As Executive Producer (News Editor), you’ll lead the BBC News channel’s Washington DC team in delivering compelling live and breaking news coverage. You’ll oversee a talented group of Assistant Editors, Senior Journalists, Journalists and Presenters, producing several hours of output daily—primarily in the evenings. This role is pivotal in growing our North American audience and redefining how digital and linear news intersect. We seek a seasoned journalist with strong leadership skills and deep expertise in U.S. politics.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Lead editorial and creative decision-making for live and breaking news coverage, ensuring journalistic integrity and quality under pressure.
- Champion visual storytelling across broadcast and digital platforms, emphasizing transparency and authenticity in all reporting.
- Oversee the Washington DC team, setting clear performance expectations, fostering team spirit, and addressing issues with fairness and respect.
- Coordinate with global BBC News resources to deliver comprehensive coverage of major international events.
- Guide the development of output across social media and digital platforms, aligning with audience growth strategies.
- Collaborate with other senior leaders in the bureau to support the “Follow The Sun” strategy for continuous global news coverage.
- Model inclusive leadership and uphold BBC Values, inspiring a motivated and respectful newsroom culture.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Proven broadcast journalism experience with strong editorial judgment, writing, and production skills across UK, US, and international news.
- Demonstrated ability to lead live and breaking news coverage under pressure, making swift, sound editorial decisions.
- Deep understanding of newsgathering and production technologies, including digital reporting and innovative storytelling tools.
- Effective leadership experience managing diverse teams, fostering collaboration, and supporting professional development.
