Purpose Of The Role

BBC Sport is seeking an Editorial Executive to shape and lead our short‑form video offer across digital platforms. This role is responsible for setting the editorial direction for short‑form video, delivering a distinctive, high‑quality experience across the BBC Sport website and app, iPlayer, YouTube and social channels.

Leading a specialist video curation team, you will also operate as a senior editorial figure within BBC Sport, contributing to wider strategic thinking and deputising for the Executive Editor when required.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

BBC Sport reaches millions of people every week and plays a vital role in how audiences experience major sporting moments.  Short‑form video is a critical part of how audiences experience sport. This role offers the opportunity to shape a video‑first proposition within one of the most influential sports brands in the world.

You’ll help define how human editorial judgement and algorithmic systems work together responsibly. The role combines creative leadership, strategic thinking and hands‑on delivery, with real influence over how BBC Sport evolves to meet changing audience needs.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Set and deliver the editorial strategy for BBC Sport’s short‑form video, ensuring a coherent, high‑quality, video‑first experience across all platforms
  • Own the editorial approach to curation, defining tone, prioritisation and storytelling while balancing human editorial judgement with algorithmic support
  • Act as the lead editorial partner to Product, Design, Data and Technology teams, shaping discovery, personalisation and the evolution of the short‑form video experience
  • Lead and develop a specialist curation team, planning resources and workflows to deliver consistent, high‑performing output at scale
  • Use audience insight and performance data to drive editorial decision‑making, maximise reach and engagement – particularly with younger audiences – and continuously improve the offer
  • Ensure all curated content meets BBC Editorial Guidelines and compliance standards, while operating as a senior leader within BBC Sport and providing resilience across the leadership team

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Significant experience in digital journalism, with a strong track record in short‑form video and editorial curation
  • Proven ability to deliver video‑first editorial strategies across multiple platforms
  • Experience working with data‑driven or algorithmic content systems, and sound judgement in balancing editorial oversight with personalisation
  • Strong editorial decision‑making skills, particularly in fast‑paced or high‑profile environments
  • A clear understanding of audience behaviour, especially younger and mobile‑first audiences
  • Experience leading and developing editorial teams, and working confidently with Product, Design and Technology colleagues
  • Ability to use data and insight to shape editorial strategy and measure impact
  • Thorough knowledge of BBC Editorial Guidelines and compliance requirements
