Editor, South West Business Insider – National World (Remote)

The Business Editor reports to: Group Head: Business News and Information

Job Objective

  • Oversee the production and uphold the editorial quality of Business Insider’s South West print magazine, managing article commissioning, feature writing, and data-driven rankings.
  • Produce exclusive, high-value daily content for Insider Media’s website, ensuring originality and regional relevance.
  • Build and maintain a robust network of regional contacts, with a particular focus on M&A (dealmaking), property, technology, SMEs, and manufacturing.
  • Plan, organise, and chair high-profile business events, including roundtables, breakfast briefings, and large-scale evening awards ceremonies.

Key Tasks

The following is not an exhaustive list of tasks but is meant to be indicative of what is expected of the Editor.

The Editor is:

  • required to keep their own diary, be highly organised and manage their time effectively in order to be able to prioritise the events and editorial workload to meet tight deadlines.
  • able to work calmly under pressure with a strong sense of accountability, accuracy and pride in the publication.
  • an engaging writer, who demonstrates they are able to get to the heart of and understand complex business subjects.
  • required to take responsibility for special projects or publications produced alongside the main magazine (for example Investment Guides).
  • required to take the lead at specific events such as networking breakfast debates, round-table discussions and black-tie dinners. The Editor will be required to source speakers who are leaders or experts. The more senior the better. The Editor will be the point of contact for the Events team with regards to that event.
  • required to take responsibility for organising, chairing, hosting events in front of audiences from 8 to over 800 and write up coverage of round-table, breakfast and other events
  • required to send the event team contacts and leads to encourage entries into awards.
  • required to be social-media savvy, active on Insider’s social channels and keen to engage with our audience in print, in person and online.
  • required to send to the digital news writer leads for exclusive news stories, as well as producing daily exclusive content.
  • to ensure that sufficient meetings are held every month with the right contacts in order to be an expert within their specialist sector(s) and as a result generate and contribute new ideas for events and features.
  • to become the source of quality intelligence from the marketplace to guide decision-making or simply provide good knowledge of what is happening in the market in order to inform key management decisions.
  • to ensure that membership increases as a result of ensuring business cards are forwarded to the membership team, actively encouraging businesspeople to become members or participating in a trial period to receive the magazine and doing all that is necessary to actively achieve an increase in member numbers
  • Manage a deputy editor and any other regional staff who might fall under the South West Editor’s leadership.
