Job Introduction
In this role, you would be part of a team of video journalists across North America, supporting our video production operation in conjunction with teams in London, Singapore and Sydney. And you would join BBC News as we expand our team in North America and raise our ambitions in what is our biggest market outside the UK.
The BBC is the most trusted news brand in the US. Our North American digital operation covers US and Canadian news for domestic and global audiences.
Finally, BBC News is committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive organisation. You will help us cultivate that.
This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).
Main Responsibilities
The BBC is looking for a creative, driven and news-hungry journalist with strong video editing skills to join our expanding digital video team in North America.
We’re after a video specialist who understands digital audiences and gets a thrill out of producing smart and engaging short videos (1-3 minute duration) around breaking news and must-watch moments.
Based in Washington DC, your main duties would be to edit and produce news video, including short news clips, explainers and features for our digital coverage on the BBC News website and app.
The ability to cut and edit video to tight deadlines is essential.
We want someone who can hunt down the most striking visuals and compelling voices at speed – and who is eager to work with correspondents to harness the potential of the world’s leading broadcaster to create impact with US, Canadian and global audiences and help them make sense of the world around them.
You will have a knack for spotting and developing compelling video content. You be able to write clearly and accurately and use photographs, graphics and video to bring stories to life. You will need to be able to remain calm under pressure and to work collaboratively with others.
Journalists on News will also use data analytics to make sure our journalism is accessible and reaching as wide an audience as possible.
Are you the right candidate?
o Proven experience of producing fast-paced, digital-first news coverage in video for online platforms with attention to accuracy, context and tone
o Strong editing skills (FCPX, Adobe Premier or similar) and ability to quickly learn new ones, and experience of digital content management systems
o Awareness of copyright issues and experience of tracking down footage and gaining permission to use
o Experience of spotting, producing and devising news video that will appeal to digital news consumers
o A proven capacity to generate ideas that will help bring in new audiences and broaden our editorial agenda
o A proven track record of working swiftly and making decisions under intense pressure
o Demonstrable experience and understanding of the news agenda in North America
o Familiarity with using social media, search and audience data to improve storytelling
